From August 1998 (S plate) the system was changed to allow two plate changes each year, on March 1st and September 1st. As the final usable prefix letter `Y' was to be used from March 1st 2001 a new format was introduced from September 1st 2001.

The registration mark shown can be broken down into: PU52 ABC

PU -The local memory tag. The first letter refers to the region and the second to the local DVLA office. In this case the vehicle was first registered in Carlisle.

52 - The Age identifier. In 2002, 02 represents six months from March to August, 52 covers the following six months from September 2002 to February 2003. This format will continue until 2049.

ABC - The final three letters are random, but will exclude I & Q and other combinations that may not be considered desirable.
